Bathroom and laundry plasterboard in Deception Bay: system first
3 min read · QBCC 15438315

A bathroom renovation can involve plasterboard, tiling, waterproofing and several other trades. Choosing a lining marketed for wet areas is only one part of that work. In Deception Bay, the plastering scope should follow the intended construction and finish, with responsibilities agreed before walls are covered. A board name by itself does not make a shower or laundry waterproof.
North Brisbane Plastering can discuss lining work for bathroom and laundry renovations. Share the plans and the requirements confirmed by your builder, designer and waterproofing or tiling trades. The selection and installation need to suit the specific application rather than relying on the board used in another room.
Identify each surface's intended use
A wall receiving paint may have different requirements from a surface receiving tiles or forming part of a wet-area assembly. Show the shower, bath, fixtures and proposed finishes on the layout. The responsible project professionals should establish which substrate and system are appropriate in each location.
Do not assume an existing lining can remain simply because it has survived behind tiles. Its condition, support and compatibility with the proposed work need checking. If moisture damage is present, the source must be addressed before new lining is installed. Replacing the visible material does not repair leaking plumbing or an unresolved waterproofing issue.
Coordinate the complete system
Lining requirements may include specific board, framing, fixings and junction details. Waterproofing and tile installation have their own requirements and must be coordinated with the substrate. Ask the relevant trades to confirm compatibility before materials are ordered or fitted.
CSR Gyprock's Red Book illustrates why wall and ceiling performance is considered through complete systems. For your bathroom, obtain the applicable project and product information rather than treating a general article as an installation specification. The plasterer should receive the details needed to price the agreed lining work.
Settle services and fixtures before closure
Plumbing and electrical work need to be arranged with the appropriately licensed trades. Fixture positions and any required support or penetrations should be resolved before lining conceals the wall. If the layout changes, tell the affected trades while those changes can still be coordinated.
Also discuss junctions with ceilings, floors, doorways and existing rooms. Cornices or square-set details should suit the design and the specified systems. Agree who handles each stage, including any demolition or preparation outside the plasterer's quote.
Assess older materials before removal
Renovation work can expose materials that are not identifiable from the painted surface. Australian asbestos guidance for householders advises checking before repairs or renovations where asbestos may be present, including homes built or renovated before 1990. Do not cut, sand or break suspect lining yourself.
For a Deception Bay bathroom or laundry, provide photographs, the planned finishes and the lining specification with your enquiry. See our renovation and plasterboard services, check service areas, or request a lining quote. Clear and explicitly agreed responsibilities between plastering, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical work and tiling help keep the quote accurate and the sequence appropriate to the room.
